Ahu Lani Sanctuary on the slopes of Mauna Kea (Elevation 3000') Ahu Lani Sanctuary is a unique forestry center, farm, and private retreat located on the slopes of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. Ahu Lani ("Heavenly Shrine") is dedicated to restoring native forests and associated wildlife habitats and to educating the public and policy makers about the value of native forests and habitats. Farming operations include raising honey, eggs, and organic produce. Ahu Lani is also a perfect setting for a private retreat for an individual, couple, or small group. Serene walking paths are maintained throughout most of our 24 acres. The 700 square foot round room is ideal for yoga, meditation, body work, and dance. The fireplace and living room in the Great Hall provide cozy nooks for reading and chatting. Wireless internet keeps you connected as need be. Several rooms are available ranging from the King Suite and Queen Suite with private baths, to smaller rooms with shared bath. Please email for rates and availability. View of Mauna Kea from Ahu Lani Sanctuary Below is a map of Ahu Lani. To the North is is the Pacific Ocean. Looking makai, or towards the ocean, you can look down and see the blue Pacific several miles away and 3000 feet below. To the South (which at Ahu Lani is "mauka" or towards the mountains), you can see the summit of Mauna Kea and the foothills and cindercones at its base. Many of the world's finest astronomical observatories are located atop Mauna Kea, and you can see a few of them from Ahu Lani. On the Western border is Kalopa Gulch [pronounced Kaa'-Low-Paa'], in which a river flows at times of heavy rains. The gulch is home to groves of Eucalyptus trees. Ahu Lani is surrounded by ranch land, and you can sometimes hear the low bellowing of cows or the hoot of a paniolo (cowboy). Flocks of wild turkeys and pheasant also call Ahu Lani home.  |
